District Bagh:
The Area of district bagh
is 1368 sq. km. having projected population
estimated in 1994 about 0.443 million.
Topogragphically this district falls into
mountainous zone.
Administratively, district
bagh has three sub-divisions namely Bagh, Dheer
kot and havaily. This district resembles to
district poonch in all means due to its
history, culture, customs and tradions. The area
of this district is highland deeply cut by
rushing hill torrents. District bagh, as a whole
is rich in natural beauty. Bagh, Dheer kot and
suddhen gali, hanse chowki, neela butt, Las
Danna mahmood gali, kahuta , havaily and ganga
choti are the main scenic spots in this
district.
History:
The political environ had
further deteriorated in the State o Jammu &
Kashmir after the unanimously passed and adopted
resolution on 19th July 1947. This
resolution firmly stated that “the state of
Jammu and Kashmir should accede to Pakistan for
geographic contiguity, religious and cultural
reasons and ethnicity. In this meeting it was
resolved that all party workers would work in
there areas of influence with regards to the
spirit of resolution.
In bagh, Sayyed Hussan shah
gardezi who was president of Muslim conference
of tehsil bagh with the other activists like
Sayyed khadim hussain shah, Secretary Muslim
conference Bagh, Sardar Doost Mohammad kahn and
others were assigned the task to actively
coordinate and further strengthen the objectives
of the party.
During this period Dogra
army victimized hundreds of Muslim and burnt
several houses of Muslims to ashes. This
situation made the activist to organize a
clandestine action committee, to launch armed
struggle, the only dispensable way to overthrow
the problem.
On knowing about this
action committee, Dogra regime arrested Syed
Hussain shad gardezi and many others. Section
144 was already imposed on this area and all the
activist started violating it. Meanwhile Syyed
sadiq Hussain shah, aadil gardezi, moulana
mazhar nadvi and Syed shamshad Hussain decided
and worked for organizing a meeting with people
at the central place of bagh and also to hoist
Pakistan flag on bagh fort. This procession
while marching towards bagh was found by
hundreds of Muslims and when it reached Neela
butt it had already turned into thousands.
Here under the leadership
of Peer Ali Ashghar Shah the procession
proceeded towards Bagh where it camped at Huda
Bari because the Dogra army has encircled and
targeted the whole area.
On 26 Aug. 1947 when the
grand meeting at Huda bari started the dogra
opened fire. It was the time when Peer Ali
Ashghar Shah had just stood at the stage to
address the people. The first shot pierced to
the chest of Qabil khan a volunteer from sohawa
who was martyred while having raised an unfurled
Pakistan’s flag. Approximate 80 people were
injured. This cause serious anger throughout the
whole state and Muslims of bagh and sudhanoti
announce armed rebellion as the only solution to
the problem.
After the liberation of
Bagh, civil order was restored and Peer Ilyyas
Shad Qazi Aalim din were appointed as the chief
of Bait-uk-mall. Before 1947, Bagh was one of
the four Tehsils of the state of poonch. It was
declared as district in 1988, before it was a
part of district poonch.
Tehsil bagh:
It is 100 km. away from
Muzaffarabad via Kohalla and 80 km. via sudhan
gali, 205 km. from Islamabad and 46 km. from
rawalakot. This town is situated on the
confluence of two mini nullahs- malwani and mall
which flow all the year round.
Bagh town comprises shops
of all trades and has all the basic
necessesities of life. The people of bagh are
brave, courageous and skilled, especially the
artificers in the field of bakery and
confectionery. The well recognized Haji Peer
Pass is about 32 kkm. From bagh city linked with
metal led road. Middle standard hotels, PWD rest
house and forest rest house are available for
visitors.
Dheerkot:
The fascination and
charming place of district bagh is 25 km from
kohalla the gateway of Azad Kashmir and 132 km.
from Islamabad located at an altitude of 1676 m.
Dheer kot posses and extremely pleasant and
healthy climate. This place is very popular
among the visitors as a tourist resort mainly
due to easy access, suitable altitude and
beautiful landscape.
Neela Butt:
From Dheer kot towards
southeast 5 km ahead is neela butt. This spot is
situated at an altitude of 2000 m. Despite its
scenic beauty, this place is well-known for its
historic background.
Las Danna:
From bagh 15 km. long
metalled road leads to Las danna. From lasdanna
the main highway branches to three roads, one
leads to mahmood gali plangi and kohalla the
other runs to haji peer and Aliabad while the
third one towards Abbasspur/ dowarandi and
hajeera. Here Ajk tourism dept. has constructed
a tourist rest house.
17 km. ahead of Las danna
is another scenic spot of tourist’s attraction
Mahmood Gali. From here 10 km. away is Kahuta
linked with metal road, is also a worth seen
place. From Kahuta 10 km. away is Kailer and
then 12 km. from Kailer is Hallan valley.
When and how to go:
Bagh town can be visited
year round. This town is accessible by metalled
roads from rawalpindi, district Muzffarabad and
district poonch. You can drive in your own car,
van or bus to bagh(166 km. from Rawalpinid, 100
km from Muzaffarabad via kohalla, and 46 km.
from rawalakot. Its is also linked with
Muzaffarabad via sudhan gali (86 km). The area
of higher altitude like Dhirkot, neela butt,
Mahmood gali, Lasdana and Kahuta can be visited
only in summer, as these spots are too cold in
winter.
Where to stay:
There are many reasonable
and inexpensive hotels with 24 hours hot and
cold showers and rest houses in Bagh town.
Tourist rest of some departments at the spots of
tourist attractions are also available. These
resorts are bookable through the district
offices of AJK tourism dept, PWD, Forest Dept.
